Apart from music and my “day-job” as a chartered surveyor specialising in leasehold enfranchisement, I have always had an interest in wine, especially European wine, so I decided to write this book about European Wines.

 
When I was 18, I was sent to Bordeaux to train as a “stagiaire” with some of the most reputable wine houses in France. It gave me an enormous respect for such wine makers and engendered a life-long curiosity to discover more.

Nowadays people so often assume the best value wines come from the southern hemisphere and, whereas Australasian and South American wines are frequently very impressive, in my opinion, they do not offer better value than European wines. Furthermore, in this day and age when we should all be concerned about “carbon foot prints”, it is hard to justify importing wines from the other side of the world, particularly when the best wines are right here on our doorstep.
 

“Understanding European Wines” is a hard back book comprising 130 pages, including information on all the major wine regions of Europe, with maps of all the wine regions and a glossary explaining the characteristics of grape varieties and many terms relating to wine. For those who find a lengthy wine list in a restaurant to be quite intimidating, this book will give you the knowledge to order with confidence, knowing what to expect. For those who are not intimidated by a wine list, but are simply interested in wine, they will find that there are many fascinating facts and figures which will add to their interest.
